Keynsham woman dies aged 106

A KEYNSHAM woman who made a wide-ranging contribution to the life in the town has died at the age of 106.

Mrs Marea Allwood-Coppin was a telephonist for the General Post Office (GPO) in Northampton in 1938. After the outbreak of the Second World War, she joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and worked in radar, mainly up and down the east coast tracking V1 and V2 flying bombs.

She became a Keynsham resident in 1956, where her roles included working for the Family Planning Association in St Ladoc Road and for Meals on Wheels, as well as chairing Keynsham Townswomen’s Guild and starting other branches in the Longwell Green area.

Mrs Allwood-Coppin – pictured here with great-grandson Jeffrey Roberts – died peacefully on March 10 at the St Philip and St James Care Home.
