YOUNG players from Keynsham RFC were among those who took part in the Defender Rising Stars Cup, hosted by Bristol Bears in partnership with PREM Rugby.
A total of 22 grassroots clubs from across the South West took part in a day of competitive rugby at Bristol Grammar School’s Failand Sports Ground.
The annual under-11s and under-12s festival is one of a series of nationwide events hosted by PREM Rugby clubs which allow young players to experience playing within a professional environment against teams from outside of their immediate local area.
The under-11s teams were judged on rugby’s core values – teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship – with the focus on development and participation rather than match results. The winners of the U12s festival were Old Bristolians RFC.
Keynsham RFC U12 player Leone said: “It’s a nice day. It’s an event for the community. You play with your team, you improve, and you just overall help each other get better.
“If you win, you’re going to Twickenham, but the overall experience is just to help yourself get better and improve. I really enjoyed it.”
Coach Shaun Smith added: “It’s a good chance to showcase rugby values and rugby itself, but also to play teams you don’t get to meet on Sundays.”
For many of the region’s youngsters at the event, it was their first time stepping onto a club pitch, as they were cheered on by proud parents and coaches. Watching the rugby before handing out the prizes at the awards ceremony were Bristol Bears stars Fitz Harding and Benhard Janse van Rensburg.
Fitz said: “Competitions like this really benefit the future of our sport. The playing experience and environment helps young players grow and develop into the next generation of players.”
