Keynsham resident leaps on a bus to celebrate birthday

A KEYNSHAM resident was able to celebrate his leap-year birthday month on the move, thanks to his free birthday bus pass.

Eagle Yip, who turned 56 on February 29, settled in the town after moving from Hong Kong under the Government’s resettlement scheme.

He has been among residents who have been taking advantage of the free bus travel scheme from Metro Mayor Dan Norris’s West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.

He said: “It is my first leap year birthday since I, alongside my wife and son, came from Hong Kong to live in Keynsham in August of 2022.

“It was a big surprise for me to be able to enjoy free bus travel this February. I have taken the bus multiple times to Chinese supermarkets in Bath and Bristol to buy some Chinese dumplings and noodles for dinners with our friends over our Lunar New Year holidays.

“I have to say that the Birthday Bus Month Pass has really motivated me to reconnect with my friends – including a high school classmate whom I have not seen in over 35 years.”

The free pass gives local people unlimited bus travel throughout the month of their birthday. In 2024, those with leap year birthdays – including Eagle – have been able to enjoy using their bus pass on their birthday itself.

Mr Yip added: “I want to say a huge thank-you to Mayor Dan Norris, as this Birthday Bus Month Pass has made my life in the UK richer. I’ve been able to save money, widen my horizons and create sweeter memories! What an unforgettable February in my life!”

The mayor is urging those in the region with April birthdays and beyond to sign up to Birthday Buses.

He said: “It’s many happy returns – and singles – for Eagle! I’m so pleased he’s enjoyed using his Birthday Bus Month Pass so much.”
