LIDL says it will continue with its plans to build a supermarket in Broadmead Lane, Keynsham, despite an Aldi store being approved for a site nearby.
Aldi has been granted planning permission by Bath and North East Somerset Council’s planning committee for the new store on the former Brincliffe Nursery site on the A4 Bath Road.
Lidl, meanwhile, wants to redevelop the Jewson Builders Merchants site opposite Waitrose for a new store and is working towards submitting a planning application.
Daniel Preece, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: “Lidl is now the UK’s fifth-largest supermarket and continues to grow – but Keynsham shoppers are currently missing out.
“That’s why we’re committed to delivering a new Lidl foodstore on Broadmead Lane, the best location for a modern discount supermarket to serve Keynsham.
“The site offers excellent transport links, makes use of previously developed brownfield land, and is conveniently located for Keynsham residents.
“Hundreds of local residents have supported our plans during consultation, and we look forward to providing further updates soon.”
