Fond farewell as Keynsham restaurant closes

A POPULAR Indian restaurant in Keynsham has shut its doors for the last time.

Customers flocked to Cinnamon Lounge and Dining in the High Street to say farewell before it finally closed on Sunday July 12.

The restaurant became well known for its charitable work as well as its dedicated vegan menu, which attracted a loyal following. But rising bills and the cost-of-living crisis finally took their toll.

In announcing the closure on Facebook, owner Ami Rahman said the restaurant had become a second home to him.

He added that Cinnamon was proud to become first Bengali-run restaurant in the UK to offer a dedicated four-page vegan menu, while also making it a priority to cater for customers with food intolerances and allergies.

“I’m equally proud that Cinnamon became a business that gave back,” he said.

“Over the years we’ve supported local charities, raised money for worthy causes, contributed to the Royal United Hospital Bath, supported countless local schools, sports clubs and businesses, and always tried to play our part within this wonderful community.”

Like many businesses, Cinnamon faced a battle to survive during the Covid pandemic, but it pulled through thanks to its loyal customers and “incredible” team of staff.

“Sadly, the years that followed brought a different battle,” said Ami.

“Spiralling food prices, soaring energy bills, rising wages, increasing overheads, the burden of VAT and the ongoing cost of living crisis have made life incredibly difficult for independent restaurants across the country.

“Hospitality is built on passion, but passion alone cannot overcome every obstacle.”

Customers expressed their sadness at news of the closure.

One described the news as “another massive loss to Keynsham High Street and the sad end of an era. The vegan menu was legendary and appreciated.”

Another customer wished Ami and his team well for the future, saying: “You’ve welcomed and supported a community for many years, through ups and downs, and I hope you cherish that as you move into your next chapter.”
