SIX members of the Tweedie family from Keynsham signed up to take part in the Gower Peninsular Ultra 50km Challenge to raise money for Daniel Money’s Cancer Research UK page.
Not only didn’t they realise that temperatures would be in the very high 20C range on Sunday July 19 but also that it was World Cup final day!
Pete, Julie, Scott, Lucy, Anna and Jack Tweedie had been training for the past few months, including walking sections of the South West Coast Path in North Cornwall. However, nothing could prepare them for walking 50km in 13 hours, in very high temperatures.
Scott, Anna and Jack were in the same school years as Daniel, his brother Joe and sister Freya and have been friends from pre-school onwards.
The Tweedie family 5 became the Tweedie family 6 in August 2025 when Scott married Lucy.
On Daniel’s Cancer Research UK fundraising page, they wrote: “Our children grew up together and we all have so many special memories from this time.
“We will walk to remember Daniel and also to support his family. We remember Daniel for his wonderful smile, his incredible humour and the exceptional young man that he was.”
Daniel was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in November 2022 at the age of 24, while working as a junior doctor at Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham.
He received excellent treatment for his cancer at the QE Hospital in Birmingham but in May 2025 treatment options ran out for him. He was looked after by the palliative care team at Birmingham Hospice with his girlfriend Abbie and dog Arlo by his side.
Daniel died at the hospice on September 11 last year, surrounded by his close family, at the age of 27.
Daniel chose Cancer Research UK as the charity he wished to support and his fundraising page was set up in February 2023. Since February 2023, over 50 events have been held to raise money for Daniel’s CRUK page.
The Tweedie Gower Peninsular 50km Ultra Challenge page was launched in June this year, which coincided with Daniel’s page passing the £100,000 mark, a remarkable achievement.
Pete Tweedie said: “I’m very proud of my family for completing the 50km Gower Ultra Challenge. It was incredibly tough, but with the support of each other, and driven on through our memory of Daniel, we made it. We’ve raised over £4.6k through the generosity of over 160 of our family and friends.”
